Mines RTP: Where the 97% Actually Comes From

Spribe publishes a 97% RTP for Mines, which means a 3% house edge. Most casino games ask you to take that figure on trust, because the maths lives inside reel strips or a crash distribution you never see. Mines is different. The whole game is a counting problem on 25 tiles, and you can rebuild the payout table yourself with a calculator. This page does exactly that.

minesstats.com is an independent educational site, not affiliated with Spribe. Figures below are calculated from the published 97% RTP and match values reported from the live game; the in-game paytable is authoritative.

Step 1: The Chance of Surviving k Picks

Say the board has m mines, so 25 - m safe tiles. You want the chance that your first k clicks are all stars.

Pick by pick:

  • First pick safe: (25 - m) / 25
  • Second pick safe, given the first was: (24 - m) / 24
  • ...and so on, one fewer tile and one fewer star each time.

Multiply those together and you get a compact formula using combinations ("n choose r"):

P(k safe picks) = C(25 - m, k) / C(25, k)

This is a hypergeometric probability: drawing without replacement from a fixed population that contains a fixed number of "bad" items. It is the same maths used for drawing cards from a deck. Because tiles are removed once opened, each new pick is slightly riskier than the last.

Step 2: The Payout Formula

If the game were perfectly fair (100% RTP), the multiplier for k stars would be the inverse of the survival chance. Mines takes a 3% cut:

Multiplier(m, k) = 0.97 x C(25, k) / C(25 - m, k)

Check it against two values reported from the game:

BoardSurvival chance for 1 pick0.97 / chanceReported multiplier
1 mine24/25 = 96%1.01041.01x
20 mines5/25 = 20%4.854.85x

Both match. The formula is not a guess at Spribe's code; it is simply what a 97% game on this board has to look like.

Step 3: Why Every Cash-Out Point Returns 97%

Your expected return from aiming for k stars is the chance of getting there times the payout:

E = P(k) x 0.97 / P(k) = 0.97

The survival chance cancels out. That is why no cash-out rule, mine count, or tile order changes the RTP. Low targets win often and pay little; deep targets rarely land and pay a lot. The price per unit of risk is identical everywhere on the board.

This holds even for flexible rules like "stop once I'm above 3x" or "take one more if I feel lucky". Any rule that decides when to stop based on what you have seen so far still ends at some k, and every k is priced at 97%.

A Worked Example: 3 Mines

StarsSurvival chanceMultiplierExpected return
188.00%1.10x97%
277.00%1.26x97%
366.96%1.45x97%
549.57%1.96x97%
829.57%3.28x97%
1019.78%4.90x97%
1212.43%7.80x97%

At 5 stars on a 3-mine board you are close to a coin flip for just under double. At 12 stars you win about one round in eight for 7.80x. The expected-return column never moves.

The Exception: The 10,000x Cap

Payouts in Spribe Mines are capped at 10,000x the stake. On the high-mine boards the formula blows past that cap within a few clicks, and the extra is simply not paid. When the cap binds, the expected return drops below 97%, sometimes dramatically.

Board and targetSurvival chanceFormula multiplierPaid (capped)Expected return
20 mines, 4 stars0.0395%2,454x2,454x97%
20 mines, 5 stars0.00188%51,536x10,000xabout 18.8%
15 mines, 7 stars0.0250%3,886x3,886x97%
15 mines, 8 stars0.00416%23,314x10,000xabout 41.6%
10 mines, 11 stars0.0306%3,168x3,168x97%
10 mines, 12 stars0.00875%11,086x10,000xabout 87.5%

Chasing the maximum win on a 20-mine board is the worst-priced bet in the game: the chance of five stars is about 1 in 53,130, and the capped payout returns less than a fifth of the stake on average. Some operators also cap wins in absolute money terms, which can lower the effective return further for large stakes.

Rounding Shaves a Little More

Displayed multipliers are rounded. On a 1-mine board, the exact fair-minus-3% value for one star is 1.0104x; a display of 1.01x returns 96.96% instead of 97%. The difference is tiny per round, but it shows that the 97% is a ceiling for most settings rather than a floor.

What 3% Means in Money

The house edge applies to every unit you wager, not to your deposit. If you play 500 rounds at 1 unit, you have wagered 500 units, and the expected loss is about 15 units. A 100-unit balance recycled through many rounds can lose far more than 3% of itself, because the same money is staked again and again.

And 97% says nothing about a single session. With a 10-mine, 5-star target, a session of 100 rounds ends 30 or more units down roughly a third of the time and finishes ahead about half the time. RTP describes the average across enormous numbers of rounds, not your evening.

RTP Myths

"The board is due a clean round after several mines." Each round gets a new random layout. Past rounds carry no information. That belief is the gambler's fallacy.

"Some mine counts have a higher RTP." Before the cap, every mine count and target returns about 97%. With the cap, deep targets on crowded boards return less.

"Provably fair means no house edge." Provably fair confirms that a round's layout came from seeds committed in advance. The 3% is part of the payout table and fully compatible with a verified round.

Summary

Mines RTP is a direct consequence of counting: survival chance is C(25 - m, k) / C(25, k), and the payout is 0.97 divided by that. Every cash-out point therefore returns 97%, except where the 10,000x cap or rounding trims it. For how this translates into session swings, see our Mines strategy analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Spribe publishes a 97% RTP for Mines, which is a 3% house edge. Other studios' Mines games can use different figures, so check the info panel of the version you are viewing.
The multiplier for k stars on a board with m mines is about 0.97 x C(25, k) / C(25 - m, k), which is 0.97 divided by the chance of surviving k picks. This matches reported values such as 1.01x for one star with 1 mine.
No, the RTP is about 97% for every mine count and cash-out point, except when the 10,000x payout cap applies. Deep targets on high-mine boards hit the cap and return less.
The fastest route is 5 stars on a 20-mine board, which has a chance of about 1 in 53,130. The capped 10,000x payout makes the expected return on that target only around 18.8%.
